Five Rivers Ranch

The grapes entering the presses at Five Rivers Ranch today must wait a year or two before reaching their full potential as a glass of Fetzer wine. Such is the winemaking process—the hard work we do today pays off later. So it’s no coincidence that when we designed our new facility at Five Rivers Ranch we did so with an eye to the future. From renewable energy sources to organic growing methods to conscientious building design we sought to minimize our impact on the environment and the surrounding landscape while expanding on the precedent established at Valley Oaks.

The Next Burgundy.

California’s Central Coast stretches south from San Francisco to Santa Barbara County covering nearly 400 miles. Coastal mountain ranges provide a natural barrier that minimizes the climatic influence of the Pacific Ocean. Fluctuations in temperature, precipitation, wind and fog contribute to the region’s long growing season and diverse wine grape varietals.

The region has garnered a lot of attention recently from wine critics and aficionados, who have proclaimed it the next Burgundy — one of France’s legendary winegrowing and winemaking regions. Like Burgundy, the Central Coast’s best vineyards are nestled along the banks of rivers that wind through the area. We’re proud to have been one of the pioneers in the region, having sourced grapes from the famed Bien Nacido vineyard, among others, since 1979.

Home away from home.

In 1999 we broke ground on Five Rivers Ranch. This state-of-the-art winery is located seven miles north of Paso Robles, California. The facility was designed with three goals in mind: to ensure the production of top-quality red wines, to optimize environmentally sound winemaking and winegrowing practices and to guarantee worker safety. The wine produced here winds up on the table as Five Rivers Ranch Merlot, Syrah or Cabernet Sauvignon as well as the Central Coast components in our Valley Oaks Reds.

All of our vineyards at Fiver Rivers have been planted to certified organic standards. Careful research was done on the area’s microclimates to help us select the best planting stocks. Totaling 480 acres, our plantings include Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah and Carignane. In order to meet the productive capacity of Five Rivers Ranch, we supplement the grapes we grow with grapes sourced from key vineyards throughout the Central Coast including Monterey, San Benito, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara and Santa Maria Valley.
